In 2023, global wind power capacity surged to new heights, pushing renewable energy's share of the global electricity generation mix to 30%.
China continues to lead the world in wind power development, contributing around 66% of global capacity additions last year. Large-scale wind farms in areas like Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang are among the biggest globally. By 2030, China aims to significantly expand its utility-scale wind and solar projects, supported by robust government investments in renewables.
The graphic below showcases the top 15 nations with the largest installed wind turbine capacities, according to the 2024 Statistical Review of World Energy by the Energy Institute.

China Dominates Wind Energy
With a massive 441,895 MW of installed wind capacity, China remains the global leader, holding almost three times the capacity of the United States, which ranks second.
China's rapid development in wind energy over the last decade is rivaled only by Brazil, where Chinese companies are also expanding their presence. Brazil’s wind capacity has grown at an average annual rate of 29.5% since 2013. Government policies have encouraged further foreign investment, signaling more growth ahead.
In the United States, wind capacity has doubled over the last ten years, with states like Texas, Iowa, and Oklahoma leading in wind power generation. Today, six U.S. states generate over a third of their electricity from wind energy. Since 2019, wind has overtaken other renewables to become the largest source of renewable power in the U.S., with one of the country’s largest wind farms spanning over 100,000 acres.
Globally, wind power continues to expand, with European countries such as Germany, Spain, the UK, France, and Sweden among the top producers.
